A traditional Tibetan flint striker pouch, known as a Mechag or Chuckmuck, used throughout the Himalayan region before the invention of modern matches. These leather pouches were carried by Tibetan nomads and travelers to store flint and tinder for making fire. The curved steel plate at the bottom served as the striker to create sparks when struck against flint.
This example features a decorated metal front panel with detailed animal motifs and inset red coral-colored and turquoise-colored stones. The leather body and iron striker show authentic age, wear, and patina consistent with traditional Himalayan utilitarian objects.
Such pouches were commonly worn hanging from a belt and served both as a functional fire-starting kit and a decorative element of Tibetan dress.
A wonderful collectible piece of Himalayan material culture and ethnographic history.
